My Journey Towards Meaningful Connections in Caregiving

IMG_0196_edited.jpg

My Job

  • In-Home Caregiver

  • In-Home Patient Technician

  • In-Home Senior Personal Assistant for Administrative and Technology Support

THE BEGINNING

My desire for meaningful connections led me to become an in-home private caregiver for seniors, where I bring compassion and dedication to my work. In my previous job at a long-term care facility in Quincy, MA, I helped Barbara, an elderly woman with Parkinson's Disease, as a Certified Nurse Assistant for a year. Witnessing how the disease affected Barbara motivated me to focus on improving her daily life with emotional support. This experience honed my caregiving skills and deepened my empathy for people with Parkinson's and Dementia.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

I worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant for four years before pursuing an Associate Degree in Business at a community college in Massachusetts, where I earned a place on the Dean’s List. Despite this achievement, my subsequent office jobs left me unfulfilled.

A few years later, I decided to return to school, pursuing further education in CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) and MAOA (Medical Administrative and Office Assistant). I achieved a 4.0 GPA, earning the Director’s List Honor, and graduated with Honors in both MAOA and CMA programs. I was then hired as a Medical Assistant and Medical Administrative Office Assistant, managing patient care, scheduling, electronic medical records, medical coding and billing, answering inbound calls, and follow-up laboratory tests. This role allowed me to gain experience in hospitals, private medical groups, nursing homes, dental office administration, and other commercial offices.

CRAVING A DEEPER CONNECTION

Despite my professional accomplishments, my heart yearned for the love and care found in family relationships, which I didn't experience in my previous roles. Memories of Barbara, the elderly woman with Parkinson's Disease, frequently came to mind. Her sweetness and modesty left a lasting impression on me, like a warm hug from the past. Inspired by these memories, I realized my true calling lay in providing compassionate, personalized care to those in need.

In 2020, seeking more meaningful connections, I decided to return to caregiving while simultaneously working as a contractual office assistant and customer service assistant for an agency. Balancing two jobs, I found the role of caregiver most fulfilling.

In 2021, I was hired by an agency as a contractual caregiver at a nursing home in Braintree, MA. The residents there were very kind to me. After my contract ended, I considered working independently as a private in-home caregiver for seniors.

Drawing on my experience as a Certified Nurse Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, and Administrative Office Assistant, I developed into a valuable private caregiver. I expanded my skills to include palliative care assisting, hospice care assisting, and providing in-home companionship for disabled seniors.

Being a caregiver at home is a significant responsibility, yet incredibly rewarding. Each day, I have the opportunity to positively impact the lives of those I assist, and I am dedicated to providing them with my best care. By focusing on one client at a time, I tailor my care to their specific needs.

Others have described me as having a kind heart, a sentiment I share. I provide compassionate care to elders in the comfort of their own homes. Even the smallest acts of kindness toward them make me feel that I am truly making a difference in my role as a caregiver. This not only benefits the individuals I care for but also enriches my own experience and satisfaction in my work.

Being there for them brings me joy and a sense of purpose. It's important to show them they are not alone and that someone cares. My greatest hope is to earn the complete trust of my clients and their families so that I can apply all of my experiences to my work.

At present, I am experiencing a deep sense of fulfillment, not solely from my job, but from the love and care that I am able to provide the elderly.

I DESIGN

In 2021, I designed some product creations that showcase my unique style and personality. Crafting DIY jewelry and accessories gives me a sense of accomplishment, while designing t-shirts allows me to explore new trends and express my creativity through wearable art.

SAMPLES OF MY OWN DESIGNS

In my role as a caregiver, I often rely on my creativity to improve the lives of the elderly individuals I care for. One way I do this is by designing graphics that bring joy and connection, such as my "Not for Me" design that I printed on a t-shirt to spread cheer during the pandemic of 2021.
